Some kids will develop a condition called frequency urgency syndrome of childhood. This delightful condition occurs when a previously well kid suddenly needs to urinate all the time, as often as every ten minutes. While this is extremely annoying, especially if you are staring at an upcoming family road trip, the condition is harmless and goes away over time. However, a doctor should see any child who develops a sudden increase in the frequency of urination to make sure there is no infection or other physical condition such as diabetes, which can present with increased thirst and urination. Once your pediatrician has cleared your kid of any medical causes of the urgent need to pee and you’ve addressed any other possible contributing factors such as constipation, there is nothing for you to do but wait. And teach your son to pee in a water bottle if you are still planning to take that cross-country drive.
